Escalor accident at Moscow Metro
The metro experienced the first accident with victims on 17 February 1982. At the station Awiamotornaja were installed with their building two years before escalators of then new series, with which before the accident a constructional defect was already determined. How serious this was, became however only clear after the incident. Against 17 o'clock, straight at the beginning of the abendlichen Rush Hours, when the passenger arising increased, came it to a damage to the engine inside the escalator, which by a damaged stairway step was released, whereby, causes the brakes of the engine by evenly this projection error, as not strongly enough to have proven at the same time, in order to be able to continue the escalator. In the result the escalator, on which straight dozens of passengers were, under its load ran uncontrolled, quasi in the free case, downward. It came to a mass panic; humans within the lower range of the stairs could not leave this because of the racing speed in time and by the upper people masses dropping on them were crushed. Altogether it has 8 dead ones and approximately 30 hurt given. Since also of this incident in the Soviet media as well as nothing at all was not to be heard, the most diverse made themselves also here rumors on the way - which were speech partly from hundreds of persons, who climbed in the accident before loud panic on the railing of the escalator, thereupon allegedly in the escalator inside broke in and by machines were carved up there. (here it is to be marked that many climbed from the incident the concerning indeed on the railing and thereupon broke in, these passengers got off however only bruises, since under the railing no machines were, but hollow area.) The station Awiamotornaja had to become closed after the accident for three weeks, in order to repair in this time the escalators particularly in things security thoroughly. Also at some other stations with identically constructed escalators these had to be renewed in the future.
